Toko Shinoda (1913-2021)
Calligrapher. Real name: Mitsuko. Born in Dalian, Manchuria (Northeastern China), where her father was stationed, she returned to Japan at the age of two. She began receiving instruction from her father, who had a talent for calligraphy, at the age of six, and later taught herself Chinese calligraphy models and Japanese ancient scripts. She graduated from Tokyo Prefectural Eighth Higher Girls' School. In 1940, she held her first solo exhibition at Kyūkyōdō in Ginza, Tokyo. After World War II, she held solo exhibitions in various locations worldwide, including Tokyo, New York, Brussels, Paris, Chicago, and Washington, solidifying her position as a Bokushō (ink-painting) artist. Departing from the conventional boundaries of calligraphy, she began to treat characters as materials for free-form artistic expression, developing a unique world of creation through the exquisite contrast of ink and color, line and plane, and its profound beauty and lyricism. Her large-scale wall works at the National Kyoto International Conference Center, Tokyo's Zojoji Temple, and the Japanese Embassy in France are well-known. She continued to be active, holding solo exhibitions even after a retrospective exhibition at the Gifu Museum of Fine Arts in 1992.
