This is one of my father's antique items, displayed in our home for several decades (20-30 years, exact duration unknown). Research indicates it is a large, old ceramic piece from before the Great East Japan Earthquake, originating from Soma, Fukushima Prefecture. As you can see, it features a distinctive surface decoration.

*This item is extremely rare as the original craftsman is no longer producing them.
*While I believe there are no noticeable scratches or chips, there may be some age-related deterioration. Please examine all photos, including dimensions, to confirm the condition. The original box is not included, but it will be carefully packaged for shipping.

◆About Soma Ware:
Currently, many kilns producing Soma ware are creating their pieces with different clay due to the exclusion zone.
However, this item is an old piece from before the Great East Japan Earthquake and is made with the original clay that is no longer available.
It is characterized by a pattern called ao-hibi (blue crackle) and depicts hashiri-goma (running horses) in the style of the Kano school of painting.
It is made using a double-firing technique, which makes it slow to cool and allows it to be held even when hot.

◆Further Product Description:
★Characteristics of Ohori Soma Ware★
Three Features:

1. Hashiri-goma (Running Horses):
These depict the sacred horses of the Soma domain, which once ruled the area around present-day Namie Town, and are said to be painted in the style of the Kano school. The dynamic depiction of running horses with skilled brushwork has long been considered auspicious.

2. Ao-hibi (Blue Crackle):
The cracks that form due to the difference in shrinkage rates between the material and the glaze are called kannyu (crazing). The characteristic ground pattern where this crazing spreads across the entire celadon glaze is called ao-hibi.

3. Double Firing:
The double-layered structure is a unique technique of Ohori Soma Ware. It keeps the poured hot water from cooling quickly and prevents the vessel from becoming too hot to hold. This technique was developed through repeated innovation to create a practical vessel that integrates into people's daily lives.

*This item is for those who understand long-term storage and Soma ware. Returns will not be accepted for any reason, including to prevent product swapping. Please understand that this is a no-claim, no-return sale.
*Please examine the photos and consider your purchase.
